Description

Nine notes — the densest Lent descent in the series. From Ab6 to F2: Ab6, Ab5, F5, Ab4, F4, D4 (orange), C4, C3, F2. Three Ab's descending through three registers, two F's, two C's, and D4 as orange accent. The chord is fully inhabited — every pitch class and multiple registers of each.

Lent and mp give the nine-note descent a measured, unhurried pace. The phrase steps down register by register through blue (Ab's), red-violet (F's), and red (C's), with D4's orange appearing near the middle as chromatic warmth. Sixty-nine percent highlights — the descent opening from the bright upper register.

Variation 18 is the series' most elaborate descent: nine notes, wide range, legato, Lent — the chord examined in exhaustive detail as it falls. The orange of D4 sits at the phrase's midpoint, a single warm note in a long, cool, descending line.
