Description

The only mf in the series — and an ascending waltz. Variation 19 introduces the stronger dynamic for the first time: Animé, ascending, mf, F1 to Ab7. Eight notes with a D4 orange accent. The mf gives the ascent a more declarative quality than the mp études — not loud, but clearer, more present.

F1, Ab3, D4 (orange), Ab4, C5, F5, Ab6, Ab7: the ascent climbs through the chord's full register range, from F1's dark bass through blue Ab's and the orange D4 accent to Ab7's near-white crest. Sixty-two percent midtones, 21% highlights, 17% shadows.

The mf ascending waltz in F minor is the series' most energetic gesture. The dynamic step and the ascending triple meter push the phrase upward with more force than the quiet mp études. D4's orange accent adds warmth mid-ascent, the chord's cool palette momentarily interrupted before Ab7's silver closes the phrase.
