Description

The second Modéré in the series — and a valley, not a bell. Where Variation 7 was a Modéré bell (dark, heavy), Variation 14 is a Modéré valley with a yellow E4 accent. The measured tempo gives the forward-moving valley a more deliberate quality: neither the slow meditation of Lent nor Animé's energy.

F2, F3, E4 (yellow), C5, Ab5, Ab6: the valley dips to F2 before rising through the chord. E4 (yellow, chromatic) appears in the lower-mid register — a warm note between the F's and C's.

The Modéré valley is an unusual combination in this series, which otherwise divides between Lent bells and Animé valleys. E4's yellow accent is the most chromatically distant note in the études so far — not orange or yellow-orange but a purer warm yellow, a different color temperature in F minor's cool palette.
