Three notes — D2, D4, D5 — the sparsest étude in the entire Octaves series. No accents, no visitors, just the pitch D in three registers. Played Lent, mp, legato, in four — the arch rising from D2 to D5 at the crest, then folding back. Slow, meditative.

Orange toward gray — D's warm hue darkening at D2, brightening through earth tones at D4, and reaching its most characteristic warmth at D5. The canvas is a three-step gradient of a single color, nothing else. The simplest possible octave study.

Pure D, pure orange — three notes, three registers, one color. The octave as meditation, the phrase barely moving, the painting nearly empty.
