Eight notes ascending from Ab1 to Eb6 — Ab octaves with the most accents in the series: yellow-orange at A4, violet at Bb4, orange at D5, yellow-orange at A5, blue-violet at Eb6. Ab appears at Ab1, Ab2, Ab4. Played Animé, mp, legato, in three — a waltz climbing from near-black to pale blue-violet.

Blue at Ab1 is near-black, Ab2 barely lighter. Then a leap to Ab4 where blue reaches its characteristic hue. Above, the accents crowd: five outside tones in two octaves — warm and cool intermixed, the canvas above Ab4 a dense patchwork. Blue-violet at Eb6 closes the phrase at the top.

The most accent-dense étude in the collection — Ab's blue appearing three times against five visitors, the waltz ascending through a middle register thick with borrowed color, the octave tone nearly lost among its neighbors.
